The Burrard Arts Foundation (BAF) was thrilled to have partnered with the Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF) for its inaugural year.
The inaugural year for this annual event showcased the works of over 30 artists, 90% local and 10% international. Outdoor murals were created and are primarily located in the Mount Pleasant and False Creek Flats areas of Vancouver beginning August 20th, 2016.
The VMF aims to inspire youth and drastically change attitudes towards public art in the city of Vancouver by celebrating diversity and multiculturalism. The VMF artists work in a spectrum of disciplines and practices such as tattoo, illustration, graphic design, graffiti, figurative painting, typography, abstract painting, concept art, and textile design. BAF’s focus was on highlighting featured VMF muralists in an accessible context at the gallery, by presenting works on canvas as a complement to their large outdoor works. Corey Bulpitt and Ali Bruce also installed murals on the back exterior walls of the gallery.
In conjunction with the festival, VMF launched a satellite project titled MarketLabs, which consisted of a full building mural wrap scheduled for production on July 22th, completed by July 30th, 2016.
Local artists participating included Frazer Adams, Russell Alton, Tim Barnard, Paige Bowman, Ali Bruce, Corey Bulpitt, Nomi Chi, DEDOS, Shannon Elliott, Mark Illing, Julia Iredale, Shallom Johnson (INDIGO), James Knight, Cody Lecoy, Tim Mack, Graeme McCormack, Tierney Milne, Colin Moore, Kyle Scott, Taka Sudo, Scott Sueme, Mandy Tsung, Ben Tour, Ilya Viryachev, Ola Volo, Andrea Wan, Alison Woodward, Drew Young and more.
International artists who participated were Bicicleta Sem Freio (Brazil), KASHINK (France), LOW BROS (Germany), and NEVERCREW (Switzerland).
