This exhibition marks the end of a three month residency at the Burrard Arts Foundation in which Spence expanded his current practice to include painting. This shift in medium has necessitated a shift in his approach to image making—one in which the artist forfeits control and allows phenomenological happenstance and organic development of composition and content to unfold. Drawing content from subconscious mark making and and interest in the psychology of pictorial representation, these pieces find themselves somewhere between the figurative and abstract. Barking the Alphabet features a selection of work completed during this period and an aspect of his practice that had not yet been given a chance to take form.
